This vase carries the marks of both the maker’s hand and the fire’s unpredictable touch. Shaped through a rugged faceting technique, its angular planes expose the raw energy of the forming process. The thick, matte natural ash glaze flows and settles into the carved ridges, pulling downward as it melted in the kiln, creating deep contrasts against the rich red clay body.
Fired in the firebox of Fuukogama anagama kiln of Ruri, with a visiting party of Japanese artists from Mashiko. 18 inches tall, the vase exhibits sandy granular erosion covered by a tick layer of natural ash glaze from maple, fir and oak. The lighter orange hues at the base mark where kiln wadding lifted the piece, allowing it to endure the fire’s intensity unscathed. A balance of precision and rawness, this piece is a sculptural statement that stands with quiet strength.
